The History of Denver Boone: A Beloved Pioneer Spirit
Denver Boone, often simply called "Boone," has been a beloved figure in the University of Denver community for generations. Originally introduced in 1968, Boone was created by none other than Walt Disney Studios as a friendly, frontier-style pioneer character meant to embody the adventurous spirit of the American West—and reflect the university’s original nickname, “The Pioneers.”
With his coonskin cap, cheerful smile, and rugged charm, Denver Boone quickly became a symbol of pride and tradition for DU students, alumni, and sports fans alike. For decades, Boone cheered from the sidelines, appeared on spirit gear, and helped build a strong sense of community and identity on campus.
In the late 1990s, the university chose to retire the mascot in pursuit of a more modern and inclusive image. However, Boone’s popularity never faded. Students and alumni continued to rally behind the character, often bringing him back unofficially to events, tailgates, and campus traditions. The Boone icon became a grassroots symbol—representing not only DU pride but also the enduring legacy of a shared experience.
In 2009, after renewed interest in the Boone character, then-Chancellor Robert Coombe clarified the university’s position: while Boone would not be reinstated as the official mascot, alumni and supporters were welcome to use the image in any way they chose. This public statement solidified Boone’s place as a fan-driven icon—one embraced by the community regardless of institutional backing.
Today, Denver Boone lives on through merchandise, memorabilia, and fan-led initiatives. The Boone logo remains a nostalgic and unifying emblem, connecting generations of DU Pioneers and celebrating the bold, independent spirit of the university’s past.
